HUBERT HARMON
BRASS BELT BUCKLE
Hubert Harmon Mid, Century Artist who made Jewelry in Mexico. was a favorite of mine . Sadly not much has been written about his life. The most information I comes from, Mexican Silver Trademarks by Billie Hougart, who writes " Hubert Harmon is an innovative fashion designer who studied at the Parsons School of Design in Paris before moving to Mexico in 1941. Harmon worked in Taxco briefly, before moving to Mexico City. While working in Taxco he designed mostly silver Jewelry and copper or brass accessories. Most of the copper and brass designs were made by Maya. Silver Masters of Mexico ( Penny C. Morrill,, Schiffer1996.) mentions a mural he painted on the walls of a Bar in Taxco which the "locals" considered impolite. And a New Years Eve Party hosted by Harmon and his wife, Harmon dressed formal above the waist but only bathing trunks below This is all. lI have been able to find.
In the 2000"s I became interested in Mid century Jewelry, and noticed a picture of Hubert Harmon's wife being offered for sale. Regretfully I did not buy it, But I did have some communication with the Seller who as I recall was an American who lived in a Retirement Village in Mexico popular with Americans and Europeans.
His wife had left him, and he had a collection of his Jewelry, but some unscrupulous person got most of that by fraud. His last years was spent in a home for indigents in Mexico. Recently, I was able to verify the story from another person's account of hearing this from someone else. The most interesting thing about story was that he was very grateful for the care he was given, and appreciative. When you consider he had lived a life with people of "means". and is reduced to dying in modest circumstances- it is amazing. All about drama. If you have more information about Harmon please let me know. The Buckle listed has Harmon's Mark.
